Food Safety Tips
Follow these tips to ensure that your food stays fresh - and is good for you to eat.
Safe Food from the Store
- Don't buy food in damaged containers.
- Don't buy cracked, broken or un-refrigerated eggs.
- Put raw meat, poultry and seafood in plastic bags before putting in refrigerator.
- Pick up milk and cold foods last.
Safe Food at Home
- Wash your hands.
- Use separate cutting boards.
- Thaw frozen foods in refrigerator.
- Marinate foods in refrigerator.
- Prepare and store food at the proper temperature.
Storage of Food
- Put foods in the refrigerator as soon as you get home from shopping.
- Store eggs in their original carton in the cooler section of the refrigerator.
- Refrigerate any leftover food within 2 hours.
- Store leftovers in small containers for quick cooling.
- Always cover food to avoid contamination and drying.
Safe Cooking
- Never eat any raw foods of animal origin.
- Cook meat well, to at least 160 degrees F.
- Poultry should be cooked to 180 degrees F.
- Fish will flake with a fork when properly cooked.
- Cooked egg whites and yolks should be firm, not runny.
