Permits are required if you plan on building new construction or modifying an existing building’s structure.
Simple home improvement projects such as changing the wallpaper, carpeting or other interior surface treatments do not require a permit. However, a permit is required for projects such as new patios, replacing or adding new windows, siding, or doors.
Depending on the project, you may be required to obtain additional permits from other agencies.

This is a very general and condensed overview of the permitting process.
2. Project Review — Simple projects can be reviewed and approved over-the-counter, usually on the same day. Commercial, Industrial, or complex projects will require a longer review process called a Plan Check, which typically completes within 12 business days. Applications that are incomplete or need corrections will be returned. You may resubmit when all corrections have been made.
3. Permit Approved — Once the review process successfully completes, the permit(s) are issued.
4. Inspection — The inspection(s) required will depend on the type of permit issued. Work completed should only be based on the permit issued.
